Accessories and Miscellaneous Materials

Banding Wheels

The banding wheel is an important accessory for potters, individuals and teachers; for decorating or hand building. The wheel enables every aspect of the work to become accessible without the operator changing position or the work being handled. Walker Ceramics stock both metal 175mm & 300mm diameter Banding Wheels (Product Code HA7 & HA12) and  Wooden 267mm diameter (Product Code HA10) banding wheels.

Extruders

Walker Ceramics also the Venco Wall Mounted Extruder (Product Code HG60). It takes the tedium out of creating those handles.  It can be mounted on either the wall or the bench and comes with four punched dies. Blank dies and Punched dies are available separately.

Sodium Silicate (Product Code CB188) - the standard chemical used for deflocculation in casting bodies all over the world.  We  use only the premium grade as sub-standard brands can cause major problems.

Dispex N40 (Product Code CB80) - A very powerful deflocculant used for the final adjustment when setting up a casting slip.

Soda Ash (Product Code BA810) - A powder which can be used as a deflocculant in recipes. We do not use Soda Ash in any of our current casting slip recipes. Store in an airtight container.

Litre Weight Bottle & Chart
(Product Code HC80) - Plastic bottle, weighed & marked, and a laminated chart designed to take the guesswork out of mixing slip.

Scales - essential for consistent and accurate slip mixing. For general work , we recommend an electronic scale capable of weighing up to 1 kilo and sensitive to about 0.5 grams.

Potters Plaster (Product Code 720) - Create your own moulds with this premium grade plaster. Mixing ratio is approximately 4 parts powder to 3 parts water, by weight.

Barium Carbonate (Product Code BA80) - Used in casting slips to "neutralize" soluble salts, which cause discolouration and gelling of the casting slip. 0.1% of the dry clay in the slip mix is the amount of Barium Carbonate to add .i.e. 25 grams per 25 kilo bag. Always add to the water and mix well before adding clay. It is particularly useful in areas where the water is very hard. Care must be taking when handling this powder as it is classified as poisonous.

Mould Trimmer (Product Code JP6770) - Double ended plastic tool for trimming excess slip away from moulds. Used in preference to metal tools to safeguard against damaging the mould.

Clean up Tool (Product Code JP7202) - Primarily used to "clean up" greenware , by removing imperfections and enhancing  and sharpening any embossing. It may also by used for very fine sgraffito work.

Clean Up Brush (Product Code JP7225) - for cleaning up the necks and spouts of greenware. It has a stiff bristled brush at each end.

Slip Trailers - Soft rubber bulb or clear plastic bottle fitted with a nib. Used to trail any liquid, such as slip or liquid colour, on to the clay surface. Raised designs can be achieved by mixing the slip or colour with Brushing medium.

Sanding Pads - for removing casting lines form greenware. Several grit sizes are available.

Fettling Knife (Product Code JI6501 )- This knife is used for trimming greenware and cutting leatherhard or dry clay.

Dust Masks - An essential item in every studio. A mask should be used whenever any powder is being handled or pieces are being sanded.

Brushes - Walker Ceramics carry an extensive range of brushes to meet all needs.

Sieves - The wire sieves are used to remove any lumps or contaminates from either dry or wet materials. 30, 60, 80, 100, 120 & 200 meshes are available.

Cones - Walker Ceramics carry a full range of Orton cones in either mini or standard sizes. These cones ensure accurate temperature control during firing. Cone stands are also available.
